Movie Review : Dasvidaniya - The BEST GOODBYE EVER

A Dostana with Dasvidaniya- “THE BEST GOODBYE EVER”

Dasvidaniya – a small budget film starring Vinay Pathak released alongside a big giant Karan Johar’s Dostana. Due to my inherent fondness for Karan Johar’s movies I saw Dostana’s paid preview a day before its release but after seeing Dasvidaniya the next day, I would say to have ‘Dostana with Dasvidaniya’. Though I am on break from writing reviews for sometime, it was on one of my friend’s insistence I realized that this movie definitely deserves a good review to pen down about it and hence I have to give a brake to my break.

Dasvidaniya narrates a very simple story that is handled in a quite efficient manner by its debutante director – Shashant Shah. It truly falls in the category of small and not so hyped films that released this year (for example A Wednesday, Welcome To Sajjanpur, Rock On) and have already carved a niche for themselves at the box-office. It entails a tale of a simple, shy, reserved and quite person Amar (Vinay Pathak) who lives a monotonous and an ordinary life. He has a habit of writing ‘To Do List’ every morning. One day, he is diagnosed with stomach cancer and it seems to him that his life is now shattered. Then he listens to his inner soul and sets to write ‘Ten Things To Do’ before he dies. How Amar looks at his life after he is diagnosed with cancer and how he accomplishes his Ten Things To Do is what the movie all about. In essence, the movie symbolizes the importance of optimism in life and motivation to realize your dreams in life.

A very simple story has been nurtured with a lot of sensitivity and emotional quotient. There are a number of sequences in the movie that are worth mentioning - Vinay Pathak confronting his boss (Saurabh Shukla), purchasing a new car, going for a foreign trip to his friend’s (Rajat Kapoor) place, emotional moments with his mother (Sarita Joshi – of the TV serial ‘Baa Bahu Aur Baby’ fame) and meeting up his brother (Gaurav Khera- best known as Nandu of TV series ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin’). One scene that stands a class apart is Vinay Pathak expressing his love for his childhood friend Neha Dhupia. It leaves you spellbound and emotional and is definitely one of the best romantic scenes ever written.

The debutante director displays a creative bent of mind and his treatment of the subject is impressive. Vinay Pathak entirely carries the film on his able shoulders and there is no denying the fact that through his flawless performance he has found a place for him in the industry despite being a non-commercial actor. All the other actors that I mentioned earlier and Ranvir Shorey (in a brief appearance) suite their part well and have given nice performances. The music of the film is quite soothing to the ears, especially the ‘Alvida’ and ‘Mumma’ tracks. The later makes you moist-eyed as well as happy. Background score is perfect. Dialogues are too good.

In conclusion, I would say that Dasvidaniya is a simple story that makes you laugh and cry, encourages you to be optimistic and to make your dreams come true and overall its engrossing screenplay enchants you. It is surprising for those who know me to find that I would prefer everyone to see Dasvidaniya over the “KARAN JOHAR ‘S” Dostana. So, don’t miss it.

After seeing so much positive review and comments, i watched the movie today and the best part of movie was 'whole movie'.
The movie explored many types of love, including unconditional motherly love, and i was so overwhelmed and touched by movie that for first time in my life i felt guilty of downloading movie illegally.
The eye contacts b/w Neha and Vinay when vinay expressed his emotions for her,'things to remember' list(i must learn from him),the retro style double of vinay, making her mother comfortable in his new card, his first love scene with the red chick on his foreign trip, playing the song 'mumma' for her mother were some of delightful moments in the movie.
At last thanks for review Sumreet and do watch this movie by latest or add it to your things to do list.. (before you die)
The Mumma/Ma Song
